Germany offers high quality in education and academic excellence in many fields. An extensive choice of universities and degrees along with moderate living costs, attractive post-study opportunities on the job market or in research make Germany the ideal study destination and is the perfect combination for your personal success!

According to the German Federal Statistical Office, 374,600 international students were enrolled at German higher education institutions in the winter semester 2017/18, making up 13% of the entire student body.2)

German universities

Diverse young teamGerman universities are famous for their diversity in many ways: the number of degrees, an international student body, countless activities on every campus and research communities in many different academic fields. More and more universities have even started to offer international study programs in English, making studies in Germany even more accessible for international students.

There are 426 higher education institutions in Germany, from that 106 universities and 216 universities of applied sciences.3) Various universities are excellent in different academic fields and are also ranked among the world’s top universities. Besides a fundamental theoretical education, most universities also put great emphasis on practical experience as part of their curriculum. This is especially true for the more practically-oriented universities of applied sciences where hands-on experiences such as internships, case-studies or business projects are even mandatory for students, providing them with relevant practical skills during their studies.

Students can choose between public and private institutions. Institutions differ in quality, study programs offered, tuition and fees, location, reputation, etc. As public universities are state-financed and heavily subsidized, international students can benefit from low or even no tuition. In this way, living expenses can be kept to a very moderate level, making Germany an attractive study destination.

Post-study opportunities

Diverse students graduationAfter graduation, international non-EU students can stay on an 18-months post-study visa, which is already included in every student visa, making it very attractive to remain in the country after completion of the studies and search for employment4). Once international students find a suitable job within this 18-months period and are being offered a work contract, students can start the process of work permit and residence permit to remain in the country. As companies from all over the world highly respect German university degrees as a sign of academic excellence and professional expertise, international graduates with a German degree are considered highly competitive on the global job market. Along with the degree, employers also value the international students’ intercultural background, being highly relevant in today’s globalized world while bringing additional perspectives and approaches to a company.

Environment

International students can enjoy an open, friendly, and tolerant learning environment in an international and diverse country, rich in cultural heritage. In addition to the education systems’ advantages, you can also try tasty German food and use Germany as the perfect starting point to explore Europe’s diversity. Germany is a safe country with low crime rates and a well working public service system.
